This picture was taken a long time ago. Oddly, I still look a lot like this. Just not as tired. Posted by Hello

Oct. 31, Thurs: lunch: teriyaki salmon domburi, Koji's

Nov. 1, Friday: breakfast: pecan-oatmeal muffins from The Enchanted Broccoli Forest via Oatmeal!, a thin booklet. I thought they failed, but they were delicious. Lunch: with Betty Balmer and Maggie at the Three Square Grill. Chicken quesedilla. Rice pudding. Not impressive, but a grand place to sit. Tea/snack: With Lyza and Maggie at Acapulco's Gold, chili poppers and beer.

Nov. 2, Saturday: Takes all day to make the hom bow that I started last Tuesday (recipe in Rhoda Lee's Dim Sum). Lunch at Shakers with Pearl, Maggie. They have great hamburgers. Everything is good. Dinner is hom bow. A large glass of grapefruit, orange and tangerine juice.

Nov 4, Monday: Lunch: hom bow. Dinner: Soup made from the leftover turnips and carrots, with chicken broth, cream, lemon juice and herbs. Split the last knockwurst, with mustard. Microwaved some potatoes, toasted the skins with cheese.

Nov. 5, Tuesday: Another hom bow. A piggy helping of trifle from a photo shoot. Some quick anchovy, garlic and olive spread before worship commission at church, and after, a quick eggs and leftover potato insides and applesauce fry-up for Maggie, who said she wasn't hungry but ate it all.

Nov. 6, Wed: Breakfast: Oatmeal. Lunch: Fresh bagels with cream cheese, junk turkey, mustard and pepper. The pepper makes it. Linda Faus (FoodDay’s home economist, who tests restaurant recipes) brings in pumpkin bread pudding, pancakes and muffins, all good. I bake a loaf of the Rhodes bread before work. Dinner: pork and bok choi with my teriyaki-sorta sauce and some red pepper cooked into the oil; rice.

Nov 7; Thurs. hardly any fat. breakfast: Rhodes bread. lunch: sushi, Bush Garden: Alaska roll, crab and smoked salmon; umiboshi with sharp plums and gentle herb (not mint, perhaps radish sprouts); dinner: Maggie's sick; chicken soup with mushrooms, peppers (sweet and hot), garlic, onion. Toasted Rhodes.

Nov 8, Friday: hot cereal at the Sweetbriar Inn, execrable coffee. Lunch: bought some brown rice to go with leftover pork and bok choy.

Tea with Pearl at Shari's in Newberg (after picking walnuts and filberts): hot wings, French fries, coffee and strawberry-rhubarb pie. Not hungry for dinner; snacked on the last of the pepper-covered chevre and some tapanade I made with green jalapeno-stuffed olives a few days earlier. Maggie had pizza from the freezer.

I made some molasses crinkle cookies for lunches. They are disappointingly light in color and bland.

Dinner: roast chicken, carrots roasted with butter, savory, garlic, green onions and a Hungarian pepper (this worked). Baked potatoes with Nancy's sour cream. Also made oatmeal-fudge squares from Oats!, a hit with Lyza and M's friends. Very rich.

Nov 19, Tues: Chicken stock from the roasted bird. Granola for breakfast; chicken noodle soup with spiral noodles for lunch. Dinner: tomato sauce (mushrooms, peppers, wine) on spaghetti. Red chard with salt pork and vinegar. M didn't like. Glass of Malmsey, which we both liked.

Nov 20, Wed: Cream of wheat. lunch: chicken quesedillas with cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, green onions. Dinner: lasagna (what the tomato sauce was for) with no white sauce. Elemental and austere, but still good. Christmas ale, Jubilale, with lunch (I don't like it much).

Not hungry until 8 p.m. Jalapeno poppers and Full Sail ale at Red Robin in Hillsboro while waiting for Maggie's party at Pastor Carol's (made me ill). Made potato candy Mounds*. Weird, too sweet.

Nov 25, mon: Pork foccacia sandwich at Higgins. Surprisingly good. Dinner: spaghetti with cream/butter/smoked sturgeon. Broccoli. This is seriously good, and I don't mean the broccoli.

Nov 26, tues: Lunch at Al Amir. The shish kabab better than the swarma, but the baba ganooj was the best of all. Creamy. Dinner: homemade won tons in homemade beef broth with water chestnuts, chard and peas.

Nov 27, wed: lunch at Suriya with Pete and Roger. First Java Man coffee in a long time (vacation and all). Dinner a pickup. Made pumpkin and apple pies (Lyza mixed the p. pie filling). We're back to good old lard in the crust.

Nov. 28, Thanksgiving. The usual: turkey, stuffing, gravy, c. sauce, pumpkin and apple pies. I added the baked carrots with savory I developed a few weeks ago. Me and Pearl and Ruslan had some of that Austrian vodka and some Pinot Gris Pearl bought.

Nov. 29, Friday: Turkey sandwich for lunch. Dinner was hot dogs and leftover carrots.

Nov 30, Sat: sour milk (yogurt) pancakes from Joy of Cooking. Almost as good as the waffles. Oyster stew for lunch, with a salad. Tried the Thai Turkey Soup* from FoodDay. OK, no big rave. Too much pasta

Dec 1, Sun: Porridge the Golden Lemon from my collection (Gourmet). M. had a Costco hot dog for lunch. Weiner clouds (split hot dogs with mashed potatoes and cheese, broiled) for dinner. I'm not going to buy any more knockwurst for a while.

dec 4, wed: lunch, pork sandwich. dinner, made white sauce with cheese, put it on thawed frozen lasagna and baked it.

dec 5, thurs: Maggie's birthday at L'Etoile. Marvelous escargot appetizer (no shells, viscous red sauce); cote de veau for me and lamb breast for m; creme brulee and a cake dessert that came on a plate that said joyeaux anniversary. I had a nice Medoc. Not a waste of money, but not great either.

dec 6, fri: I worked late. snacked on leftovers.

dec 7, sat: Christmas ale (Full Sail) and great fries at Veritable Quandary with Pearl. Made the chili recipe from Waddell’s* with two versions of beans (one with lard, one with Crisco). all too salty to eat. This a recipe test.

dec 8, sun: tried again with the chili. Less salty, less interesting. made the jalapeno jelly. made frosted molasses creams (the office likes them). tried the fruitcake for the first time. Good.

dec 9 mon: leftover chili for lunch, snacks at work. interesting fruit cake with brandied prunes. rum cake from Linda Faus' vacation. dox say m. has gastritis, no junk food or caffeine or salads. gr. beef patties and cheese omelet and canned peaches for dinner.

dec 10 tues. lunch: Merle at Formosa Harbor. Broccoli beef and kung pao chix. ok. Dinner: tuna noodle brings Maggie out of funk. Great roasted carrots

HOLIDAYS GET IN THE way and I stop writing things down...high points include marvelous sesame chicken–crisp and popcorn-like–at Norm's Garden; lunch with quail, risotto made black by squid ink and absolutely perfect cookies at Zefiro; and ribs with greens, black-eyed peas and spicy BBQ sauce at Doris' Cafe. I cooked less and enjoyed it more (actually, winter got in the way and it was all one could do to stumble home, eat some oatmeal and go to bed). I made the refried part of the Waddles chili a couple of times. Crockpots are icoming in.

Dec 22. Sun: lunch: leftover Doris' (M. had catfish). Dinner: Rack of lamb (the other half of the one we had the past July with sorrel, etc.) marinated with Malmsey, garlic, lemon juice and rosemary. To match the sweetness of the marinade, sun-dried tomato risotto (made with turkey broth). And some white beans with salt pork, onions, garlic and celery. Later, a reception after Lessons & Carols and a "wee dram" at the Balmers’ with Don's party mix. I take home marmalade and a container of party mix.

Baking Cookies: Viennese chocolate thingies from Maida Heater; Noel Bars from Corvallis bakery via Gourmet; sugar cookies redux with frosting; clove butter cookies. And of course, fruitcake.

Dec. 23: The rest of the lamb, risotto and beans. Rice and beans much improved by sitting.

Dec. 24: An onion bagel with lox spread and a celery soda at Kornblatts's with people from editorial: Phil, David, Jack, Jill, Wayne. A quick snack at home: sliced BBQ pork, toasted sesame seeds, Chinese mustard.

Dec. 25: Bacon and Dutch baby for brex. Dinner at 1 p.m. is winter veggies and oil/garlic pasta at Lyza's. She made finger food, snickerdoodles, cheese. Dinner: tuna-noodle, believe it or not.

Dec. 26, Thurs: Lights are out (no electricity),at Stanich's where I had the everything burger with the egg on it.

Dec. 27, Fri: Pasta with scallops, cream, rosemary (Maggie's idea), garlic, etc. Soup of leftover winter vegs processed in leftover turkey broth.

Dec. 28: Had to work. Warm artichoke pate* (very rich, from FoodDay) with rosemary baguette, coleslaw, baked potatoes. I've been eating the oatmeal that didn't get made Thurs cause the lights were out. From the Crock-Pot, very creamy and nice, even cold it doesn't have lumps.

Dec 29, Sun: lunch: leftover pate and bacon. Dinner: roast chicken brushed with bacon drippings, baked beans (Joy of Cooking), and reheated baked potatoes. Made up a spicy marinade for jerky based on the Waddle's refried recipe. Two lbs beef -- makes enough that I have to cook it in two batches on consecutive nights. I thought it was too spicy, but it really grows on one. M. seems to like.

Monday: cooking all day. Waddle's refrieds,* with lard, to go with leftover chicken in burritos (but not made yet). Russian cabbage rolls*. Russian honey cake*. Had the cabbage rolls for a light dinner, then we snacked.

Tuesday: (New Year’s Eve) Lunch at Paradise Bakery. Not my idea. The Caesar salad seemed safe. With orange juice. Dinner: chicken, baked beans, cabbage rolls, all reheated. A piece of the Noel bars. Half a bottle of Cook's champagne and to bed before 12.
